Winona Lake, IN- The Lakers go 0-2 in the Hoops for Hope Classic over the weekend. After losses to Grace College (84-74) and Huntington University (95-81).
How It Happened:
Holy Family College vs. Grace College (84-74)
Holy Family's defense was stout to begin Friday's game. Holding the Lancers to 7 points in the early portion as the Lakers would take a 10-7 lead. The Lancers answered with a 12-0 run midway into the half taking a 22-12 lead with 9:16 remaining in the half. The Lakers rallied late in the half, ending the period on a 10-2 spurt largely because of back-to-back threes by Taylor Harper. Holy Family's Tydarius Fish scored just before the final buzzer to slice Grace's advantage to 38-35 at halftime
Both teams shot well in the half with Grace at 50 percent and Holy Family at 54 percent. The Lakers were 5-of-10 from beyond the arc but did not attempt a free throw over the first 20 minutes.
The Lakers opened the second half with five quick points by Fish to tie the score at 40-40. That proved to be the closest Holy Family would get to the lead for the rest of the contest. A few minutes later, Grace 12 points over a four-minute span to help the Lancers to a double-digit cushion.
Holy Family refused to fade, however. The Lakers trailed by 12 points with eight minutes left, but they patiently sliced the deficit to just three at 77-74 with 2:22 remaining following a basket by Byron Dean Jr.
Grace's defense locked up and held Holy Family scoreless for the final 2:21, and Grace sank four free throws to secure the win.
Holy Family College vs. Huntington University (95-81)
In the second game of the Hoops for Hopes Classic, the scoring barrage from both teams didn't take too long to get started with both teams hitting double digits within the first few minutes of the game. The first half was a back and forth battle with both teams shooting exceptional from the field with Huntington shooting 47.1 percent and Holy Family shooting 53 percent. The Lakers were led by Deloran Oliver who had 11 points in the first half.
In the 2nd half, Huntington raced out to a 7 point lead within the first two minutes. The Lakers were quick to respond and knotted the score back up at 52-52 following a basket by Bryanth Farr. The Lakers were back on the hunt and rose there lead to 6 points following a three-pointer by Tydarius Fish with 13 minutes remaining. Huntington answered with a quick 6-0 run that knotted the score back up. Huntington's offense took shape and slowly pulled away from the Lakers raising their lead 14 points by the end of the game. Huntington would secure the victory.
