URIAH AILI LEADS THE LAKERS AT THE OPENER

How it happened: Lakers open the 2019 campaign with a group of talented young freshman. Lakers began their season with the St. Norbert Tom Berry Invitational. With a course that featured multiple terrains and latitudinal changes creating a challenging but honest course.

The Lakers were led by Uriah Aili (FR/Bessemer, MI), who finished 6th overall with a time of 21:11 on the four-mile course, earning Aili his first top 10 finish in his college career. Coach Tiberg, on Aili's performance, "Uriah ran exceptionally well at his first college race. He executed and didn't get caught up in the early race starts by a lot of runners and stayed true to his pace. I am excited to watch Uriah continue to develop and really make a push this year".

The Lakers also saw strong performances throughout the team. Led by Elias Soto (FR/Elkhart, IN), placing 29th with a time of 22:43. Closely followed by Valdemar Luna (FR/Frost, TX ), who placed 32nd with a time of 22:46. Lakers also saw good performances from Nolan Portteus(FR/Battlecreek, MI), Seth Narvaez (FR/Rialto, CA), Eric Rodriguez (FR/Poplar Grove, IL) and Mauricio Diaz (FR/Idaho Falls, ID) placing 48th, 53rd, 55th, and 68th respectively to round out the varsity finishers. Lakers continued to see great races from Kiontis Gallion (FR/West Allis, WI ), Jacob Strain (FR/Kenosha, WI), and Collin Kliphuis (FR/Allegan, MI) rounding out the Lakers runners.

Overall, Coach Tiberg was very happy with the way that his team performed, stating; "The men started the season in a great spot. We were easily the youngest team at this meet and possibly one of the youngest in the country and our guys came in with some nervous jitters but really executed better than I could have imagined. This team has big things in front of them."

The St. Norbert Tom Berry invitational was won by St. Norbert College with a team score of 37 followed by Carroll University with a score of 44.

Up Next: Lakers will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Mequon, WI to compete in the Ken Weidt Classic hosted by Concordia University. Lakers are set to race the 8000m course at 12:00 AM
