Bourbonnais, IL (9.20.2019): On a hot and humid evening with the temperature over 80 degrees and dew point over 65; the Lakers competed in the Midwest Intercollegiate XC Championships. Uriah Aili led the Lakers with an impressive 6th place finish to lift the Lakers to a 5th place team finish.
How it Happened: The Lakers were led by Uriah Aili, who finished 6th overall with a time of 27:04 on the 8k course, earning Aili a top 10 performance in a competitive NAIA field. Coach Tiberg, on Aili's performance, "Uriah ran well in the rough weather conditions. He ran really well against one of the best NAIA teams in the country and was the highest placing freshman at the meet by a longshot. He ran another smart race. He kept behind the lead pack then worked his way up during the 2nd and 3rd mile."
The Lakers remaining top five were led by another quality effort from Elias Soto placing 39th with a time of 29:19 and Valdemar Luna placing 51st with a time of 30:37 respectively. The Lakers top five were rounded out by Seth Narvaez and Eric Rodriguez who placed 63rd and 71st.
Despite the tough weather conditions, Coach Tiberg was very happy with the way that his team performed, stating; "The men ran very well for the circumstance. This race was slower across the board from all schools but it was a great mental test. We need to be prepared for all conditions and this meet may not pop off the timesheet now, however, when November comes around this will be a meet that will have a big impact."
The Midwest Intercollegiate XC championship was won by Olivet Nazarene University with a team score of 18 followed by Augustana College with a score of 50.
Up Next: Lakers will be on the road in West Allis, WI to compete in the Warrior Invitational hosted by Wisconsin Lutheran College. Lakers are set to race the 8000m course at 12:00 PM on Saturday, October 5th.
