How it happened: Lakers open the 2019 campaign with a younger group combined with some key veteran returners. Lakers began their season with the St. Norbert Tom Berry Invitational. With a course that featured multiple terrains and latitudinal changes creating a challenging but honest course.
The Lakers were led by Sydney Budd (FR/Buffalo, IL), who finished 63rd overall with a time of 23:34, earning Budd a personal record in the 5k. Coach Tiberg, on Budd's performance, "Sydney had a great race and a fantastic start to her college cross country career. I am excited to watch Sydney continue to develop and get more comfortable with the distance".
The Lakers also saw strong performances throughout the team. Led by Ariel Galoff (JR/Brillion, WI), placing 80th with a time of 24:25. Closely followed by Yesenia Paredes (FR/San Leon, TX), who placed 86th with a time of 25:00. Lakers also saw good performances from Carla Martinez Morant (SR/Valencia, Spain ), Elizabeth Ward (FR/Hockley, TX), Leiman Contreras De La Vega (FR/Calexico, CA) placing 101st, 102nd, and 105th respectively.
Overall, Coach Tiberg was very happy with the way that his team performed, stating; "The girls started the season in a great spot. There is still a lot of work to do but I am happy with a race like this pre-September."
The St. Norbert Tom Berry invitational was won by Carroll University with a team score of 33 followed by host school St. Norbert with a score of 42.
Up next: Lakers will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Mequon, WI to compete in the Ken Weidt Classic hosted by Concordia University. Lakers are set to race the 6000m course at 11:00 AM
