How it happened: On a day with perfect weather conditions, the young running Lakers raced the first 6k. The course featured multiple terrain changes and long stretches of open area. The Lakers were led by standout freshman Sydney Budd, who finished 64th overall with a time of 29:04 in the 6k course. Coach Tiberg, on Budd's performance, "Sydney had a great race and a fantastic start to racing 6k races. She is stronger in the 5k and shorter but she is getting more and more confident with the distance. It is only a matter of time before she really breaks out a big personal record. I am excited to watch Sydney continue to develop and get more comfortable with the distance."
The Lakers also saw strong performances throughout the team. Led by Ariel Galoff, placing 69th with a time of 29:34. Closely followed by Yesenia Paredes, who placed 72nd with a time of 29:41. Lakers also saw good performances from Carla Martinez Morant (SR/Valencia, Spain ), Elizabeth Ward (FR/Hockley, TX), Leiman Contreras De La Vega (FR/Calexico, CA) placing 86th, 97th, and 99th respectively.
Overall, Coach Tiberg was very happy with the way that his team performed, stating; "The women ran very well on a short week. There is still a lot of work to do but I am happy with a race like this, especially with the bump to the 6k which we don't race often."
The Ken Weidt invitational was won by Carleton College with a team score of 17 followed by St. Norbert University with a score of 55.
Up Next: Lakers will be on the road in Bourbonnais, IL to compete in the Midwest Intercollegiate XC Championships hosted by Olivet Nazarene University. Lakers are set to race the 5000m course at 5:00 PM on Friday, September 20th.
